Ignorance as the Root Evil

The Shared Diagnosis

Both hermeticism and gnosticism agree: the root of all human suffering is not sin, not fate, not punishment — it is ignorance. Specifically, ignorance of one’s own divine nature and origin.

Hermeticism — Poemandres Ch. VII

“The greatest evil among men is ignorance of God.” People who do not recognize they are children of the divine Light live like animals, enslaved by bodily passions.

Gospel of Philip

“Ignorance is the mother of all evil. Ignorance will eventuate in death, because those who come from ignorance neither were nor are nor will be.”

Gospel of Truth

“This ignorance of the father brought about terror and fear. And terror became dense like a fog, so no one was able to see.” Ignorance is not a passive absence but something that generates its own distortions — error, fear, confusion.

The Two Layers

  • Hermetic: Ignorance is an absence — the absence of light in a dark room. Fill it with knowledge and it disappears.
  • Gnostic (Sethian): Ignorance is partly enforced — the archons actively conspire to keep humanity in forgetfulness. They create a “counterfeit spirit” to dull the divine spark. The ignorance is maintained by hostile forces.

The Inverse

Knowledge (gnosis) is itself liberation. To truly know that you are of light and life is not merely a belief but a transformative event that changes the soul’s orientation entirely. This is why both traditions are paths of understanding rather than ritual compliance.
